Among the
many units used for land measurement in India is katha. Although, the use of
this term has become obscure as the usage of the metric system units became
popular in India post mid 20th century, locals in some northern and eastern
states still use this term to refer to various land sizes. These regions include
Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal where due to lack of standardization,
this unit signifies different amount of land area. Apart from India, katha is
also used in Bangladesh and Nepal as a unit for land measurement by locals in
these countries. Here again, katha is used to designate varying land sizes as
there is no standardization.
While today
we no longer use Katha, it was formerly a measurement unit for land. Katha is
one of the most locally used and popular land measurement units in the country.
It is a measuring unit that dates back to the Pala Empire. Although Katha usage
has declined in India with the adoption of the metric system in mid-twentieth
century till date people in Eastern and Northern states continue to use this
term. This is a term used to describe the total area of a piece of land. For
example, while describing an acre, people of Indo-Aryan culture named this as
40 bighas (20 kathas). The unit is widely used in major Indian states such as
Jharkhand West Bengal Assam Bihar. In Bihar for example, "Katha" can
range from 750 - 2000 square feet whereas in Assam it is 2880 square feet and
Nepal 3645 square feet
