India has
always been known for its rich and varied culture, so it should come as no
surprise that it has its own unique and intricate system of measurement. Take
ground, the standard land measurement of south India, as an example. The
imperial equivalent is much more complicated; one ground equates to 384 square
yards! One acre measures 4,840 square feet and yes, there are even smaller
increments for subdivision with 1 ankanam being roughly equal to 53 square
feet.
Ground is a
unit of land measurement used in countries around the world, but especially in
India where it is widely used. The most common term used to describe ground is
the “gou” (Ꞌ)
rather than “ground”. The gou represents different thicknesses throughout India
depending on the language of usage. The Tamil and Malayalam languages use the
word கூட்டு (kūṭtu/kittu), which means “gou”,
and also represent different sizes based on region. In Tamil Nadu and Andhra
Pradesh, a single kut represents about 0.9 acres (0.36 ha); however in other
regions such as Kerala or Bengal it might stand for 1 acre or double that size.
It can be just over one square mile (2–3 km²). The only difference is
whether numbers are written before the symbol or after it:
The concept
of ground refers to a synonym for land. While it is often used as a measure of
land in some rural portions of southern India, the idea overall has been mostly
superseded by the more common land measurement units used today.
