Unit of: Area

Unit system: US customary units, Imperial units

Acre, a unit of land measurement in the Imperial and United States Customary systems, equaling 43,560 square feet or 4,840 square yards. The name 'acre' comes from Old English acre and is akin to Latin ager (“field”). Since usually a "day's work" was reckoned at 5-6 miles for one yoke of oxen to plow, it comes as no surprise that one acre was about the amount of land one could till in a day.

Several countries in Europe have used official decimalized versions of the acre throughout history. In France, the imperial acre was only used in Normandy while its value varied greatly across that region due to multiple factors including topography and historic farming methods. The most common variation during this period was between 3,600 to 9,700 square meters but 8,200 square meters was the most usual value throughout Normandy. Throughout different regions within Normandy though, there were agricultural differences, especially during the 19th century.

In India, residential plots are measured in square feet while agricultural land is measured in acres or hectares. However, bigha is a unit that is used more locally and is therefore usually associated with the northern part of the country. Since bigha denotes different measurements in different states and regions, the bigha-acre conversion would show varying values depending on where the land was located.
