Chennai Bangalore Expressway is a new development in the structure that will reduce the travel time between Bangalore and Chennai. This expressway will also reduce logistics costs. The current time to travel between Chennai and Bangalore is 6 to 7 hours. But with the completion of this expressway in March 2024, the travelling time will be reduced to 3 or 4 hours. The total estimated cost of this project is INR 17,000 crore. The owner of this project is the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

● This expressway connects the cities known as Bangalore and Chennai. The travel time between these cities is reduced by 24 hours only due to this magnificent project. The original time to travel between these cities without this expressway is 6 or 7 hours.

● The permitted limit speed on this expressway is 120 km per hour which reduces the distance between these two cities by approximately 80 km.

● This expressway reduces traffic and pollution. It highly ensures road safety. One of the main objectives of building this expressway is the promotion of the Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC) as an exclusive manufacturing and industrial hub.

● There can be five main interchanges in this expressway.

● The pre-construction expense of the Chennai Bangalore expressway in 2018 was Rs. 1,370 crores.

● This expressway provides many key amenities. For example, this expressway provides a bay for trucks, and pedestrians, a system for traffic administration, a cattle underpass, and a vehicle underpass.

The total distance of this expressway is 262 kilometers, and it has a starting point in Bangalore known as Hoskote, and an ending point in Chennai known as Sriperumbudur. There are multiple industrial projects and herbs that are nearby this expressway. Many popular automobile companies such as Mahindra, Nissan, and Bajaj plan to build their plants nearby this expressway. The expected traffic and vehicle units per day are expected to be about 45,000 to 60,000. There are two current highest between Bangalore and Chennai cities. One highway is 335 kilometers via Ranipet, Kolar, Chittoor, and Kanchipuram. Another highway is 372 kilometers from Krishnagiri and Ranipet.

This expressway would have 17 flyovers, 41 vehicle underpasses, 52 pedestrian underpasses, 143 culverts, 162 bridges, and four railway crossings. Out of the total bridges, they will be nine major bridges, nine medium bridges, and 144 minor bridges.

Impact on Bangalore-Chennai Expressway

Initial stages of this project, when it was decided to be constructed, it was considered to have eight lanes in total. But later on, this project was reduced to four lanes only in 2022. This is because of the traffic it would have in total lanes. The median of this expressway is expected to be 21 meters wide. It would also have other structures, such as bridges, Culverts, etc. This project might have eight lanes in the future. There are three phases and nine sections in The Bangalore to Chennai Expressway. All these projects will be implemented and constructed in parallel.

Estimated Cost and Travel Time

The estimated cost of the Bangalore Chennai expressway is assessed to be INR20,000 crores, just like the Mumbai Pune expressway. After acquiring the permission of the Government of Karnataka state for the acquisition of land, the ministry was also waiting for approval of the government of Tamilnadu for clearance. A major portion of the total cost is expected to be spent on constructing this expressway. The rest of the price will be spent on other major activities such as traffic control systems, project administration, vehicles, land acquisition, toll activities, etc. The total cost of land acquisition under this expressway project is around INR 6 million. This expressway is being built under the permission and guidelines of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The travel time across Chennai and Bangalore city is around 6 or 7 hours. But the travelling time is reduced effectively with the help of this expressway project. Now the travelling time between these two cities will be around 3 hours only.

Nitin Gadkari, the union minister of road transport and highway, presented that a total of 6 out of 10 total projects of Chennai Bangalore expressway are under construction to the Lok Sabha on 28th July 2022. Three of these projects are under construction in Tamilnadu at a stretch of 106 km. A new contractor has been given the final project of this expressway launderer of 12 km in Andhra Pradesh. The whole expressway project is expected to be completed by March 2024. Free from signals, Greenfield areas will pass through Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamilnadu.
